“Hi!,” the young lady said to my son, as they both reached into the grocery store refrigerator case for some milk. He looked around not aware it was him she was addressing.
The social mentor who had taken the boys shopping rushed to his rescue. “Say hello,” the social mentor whispered into my son’s ear.
“Hi,” my son says.
“You live around here?” the young lady asked.
“Yeah, picking up some groceries,” my son answered
“Well okay, see you in class,” the young lady said as she walked away.
“I took ___ to the store today,” the social mentor told me the next day, referring to my son.
“Didn’t you take him yesterday?” I asked.
“Yes, but today he asked that I take him again and all he bought was deodorant and some floss.”
I looked at him speechless, and in the recesses of my head heard the click.
